Alcanterea Rubra 200mm
Alcantarea Rubra is a spectacular giant bromeliad that makes an unforgettable statement in the garden. Its impressive rosette of broad, architectural leaves develops beautiful green, burgundy and deep reddish-purple tones, with the colour becoming richer and more dramatic when grown in good light.
Perfect as a feature plant, Alcantarea Rubra looks stunning in tropical, subtropical and contemporary gardens, around pools, in large containers or planted among contrasting green foliage. As it matures, it forms a substantial rosette that can reach around 1–1.5 metres across, creating instant structure and a bold sculptural effect.
Like other Alcantareas, it holds water in the central cup and prefers a well-drained position. It performs best in bright filtered light to morning sun, although established plants can tolerate more sun when gradually acclimatised. Protect from harsh afternoon sun in very hot locations.
Once mature, it can produce an impressive tall flower spike, adding another dramatic dimension to an already striking plant.
Tip: For the richest red and burgundy colouring, give Alcantarea Rubra plenty of bright light. Too much shade can result in greener foliage, but introduce stronger sunlight gradually to avoid scorching those magnificent leaves.
