AUSTRALIA on Anzac Day & Two-Up: Honouring Mateship the Aussie Way – with Lumpy’s 🌿
Every year on April 25th, Aussies come together to commemorate Anzac Day—a day of remembrance, reflection, and national pride. At Lumpy’s Nursery & Landscape Yard, we pause too, not just to honour those who served, but to celebrate the unique Aussie traditions that have grown from their legacy.
One of those traditions? A raucous little game called Two-up—equal parts history lesson, larrikin laughter, and good old-fashioned mateship.
🌅 The Heart of Anzac Day
Anzac Day remembers the brave diggers who stormed the shores of Gallipoli in 1915, many of whom never returned home. Their legacy lives on in every wreath laid, every dawn service, and every heartfelt "Lest we forget."
At Lumpy’s, we honour those values every day—community, resilience, and the strength of working the land. But on Anzac Day, it’s especially close to home.
🎲 What is Two-up?
Two-up is a fast-paced Aussie gambling game that's only legally played on Anzac Day, thanks to a special exemption. It’s a game that brings people together in pubs, RSLs, backyards, and even garden centres (😉) for a bit of fun, all in the name of remembrance.
Here’s how it works:
-
The spinner tosses three coins into the air using a flat wooden paddle called a kip.
-
Players place bets on whether the outcome will be:
🔘 Two heads – Heads win!
🔘 Two tails – Tails win! -
If the spinner throws three heads in a row, they win the pot and pass the kip to the next person.
It’s loud. It’s chaotic. It’s 100% Aussie. 🇦🇺
📜 Where Did It Come From?
Two-up was born on the battlefields, played by diggers in the trenches of World War I. With little more than coins, makeshift kips, and dusty boots, they created moments of joy and camaraderie in the darkest places.
That spirit lives on in every toss today—a nod to our history and a celebration of resilience, friendship, and good humour.
🌿 Why Lumpy’s Cares
At Lumpy’s Nursery & Landscape Yard, we know the value of tradition and community. Just like a good garden, mateship takes time, patience, and care to grow. Whether you’re planting poppies in honour of a loved one or laying turf for a weekend BBQ, we’re proud to be part of this strong Aussie soil.
So on Anzac Day, we’ll be tipping our hats, placing our bets, and remembering those who gave it all.
🌺 Lest We Forget
Anzac Day is more than a date—it’s a feeling. It’s mates shoulder to shoulder. It’s silence at dawn. It’s the cheer of a Two-up crowd. It’s laughter through tears. It’s Australia at its best.
Lest we forget.
From all of us at Lumpy’s, we honour those who served—and we celebrate the spirit they left behind.
