Grow Your Own Sunshine – Citrus Trees at Lumpy’s

There’s something pretty special about walking out into your own backyard and picking a fresh lemon, orange or lime straight off the tree. No plastic bags, no wondering how long it’s been sitting on a shelf — just fresh, homegrown goodness.

And right now? It’s the perfect time to get your citrus happening.

At Lumpy’s, we’re big believers that everyone should have at least one fruit tree at home. Citrus are one of the easiest places to start — they’re hardy, rewarding, and once they get going, they really give back year after year.

Why citrus?

Citrus trees are a bit of a no-brainer for our area. They love the sunshine, handle our conditions well, and don’t need a heap of fussing over.

But the real win is what you get from them:

  • Loaded with Vitamin C – great for immunity, especially through winter

  • Fresh flavour – once you’ve had a homegrown orange or lemon, there’s no going back

  • Versatile in the kitchen – sweet, savoury, drinks, desserts… you’ll use them more than you think

  • Cost saver – with grocery prices climbing, it’s one of the easiest ways to cut back

And let’s be honest — there’s something pretty satisfying about saying “these came from my tree.”

What’s the go with Kaffir Lime?

If you’ve seen a Kaffir Lime (also known as Makrut Lime), you’ll know it’s a bit different. The fruit itself is small and bumpy, but the real star is the leaf.

Kaffir lime leaves are used a lot in Asian cooking — think curries, stir-fries, soups — and they’ve got this incredible, punchy citrus aroma that you just can’t replicate with anything else.

They’re easy to grow, look great in the garden, and once you’ve got one, you’ll wonder how you cooked without it.

A little kitchen inspiration – Easy Orange Cake

If you’ve got oranges (or planning ahead 😉), this one’s a winner. Simple, old-school, and always a crowd pleaser.

You’ll need:

  • 2 whole oranges (yes, whole!)

  • 3 eggs

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 cup almond meal

  • 1 tsp baking powder

Method:

  1. Boil the whole oranges (skin and all) for about an hour until soft

  2. Let them cool, then blend into a smooth puree

  3. Mix with eggs, sugar, almond meal and baking powder

  4. Pour into a lined tin

  5. Bake at 180°C for around 45–50 minutes

That’s it. Dust with icing sugar, serve with cream if you like… and enjoy something you’ve grown yourself.

A few quick tips from us

  • Plant in a sunny spot — citrus love the sun

  • Keep the water up while they establish, especially in warmer months

  • Feed regularly with a citrus fertiliser

  • Great in the ground or pots if space is tight

And if you’re not sure what to choose — oranges, lemons, limes, mandarins — just have a chat with the team when you’re in. We’ll point you in the right direction.

A little Lumpy’s poem (because why not)

Plant a tree, just give it a go,
Sun on your back and hands in the soil below.
A lemon, an orange, a lime or two,
Before you know it — they’re growing for you.

Pick it fresh, no shop, no queue,
Better for the wallet (and good for you too).
