If you’re looking for a tough, low-maintenance beauty that brings year-round appeal with a vibrant show in winter and spring, Metrosideros ‘Little Dugald’ is your guy. Compact, cheerful and practical, it’s no wonder Jen has picked it as her favourite this month—and Lumpy couldn’t agree more.

Why We Love ‘Little Dugald’

This compact evergreen shrub is known for its:

đŸŒș Bright red bottlebrush-style flowers – blooming now!
🌿 Glossy green foliage – tidy and dense
đŸŒŹïž Toughness – tolerates wind, salt, and dry conditions
đŸŒ± Compact form – grows approximately 2m tall and 1m wide
🌳 Perfect for – hedging, screening, borders, feature planting or pots

Whether you’ve got a formal garden or a coastal escape, this little legend fits in beautifully and requires very little fuss.

đŸŒŒ Lumpy & Jen Say

A funny little ditty to honour the Dugald dynasty:

Jen said, “This Dugald’s just divine,
With flowers red like fancy wine.”
Lumpy grinned and gave a cheer,
“Best damn hedge plant of the year!”
“Screen it, pot it, trim it neat,
Little Dugald can’t be beat!”

Planting & Care Tips

🌞 Position:
Plant in full sun to part shade. It loves a bright spot but will still perform in slightly less light.

đŸŒ± Soil Type:
Free-draining soil is key. Little Dugald doesn’t enjoy soggy feet, so improve drainage if planting in clay or heavy soils.

🌿 Planting Tips:

  • Dig a hole twice as wide as the pot but no deeper.

  • Backfill with a blend of quality garden mix and native soil.

  • Water in well with a seaweed tonic to help root development.

đŸ§Ș Fertiliser:
Use a low-phosphorus fertiliser (suitable for natives). Slow-release types in early spring and mid-summer will keep it lush and flowering beautifully.

✂ Pruning:
Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape or clip into a more formal hedge. It responds well to a haircut and will thicken up nicely.

Lumpy’s Tip:

💡 Don’t forget: it’s great in pots too! Use a premium potting mix and choose a sunny, sheltered spot for best performance. Great for entrances or as a statement near the outdoor dining area.
