If you're after a plant that’s easy to grow and beautifully vibrant — say hello to Kalanchoe.
They are some of the prettiest bushy succulents around, with glossy leaves and masses of small bouquets of starry, four petalled flowers. In vivid colours in every shade from fiery red to sunny yellow and soft pastel pinks, they brighten any cold winter’s day.
And the best part? This beauty is as low-maintenance as they come.
🌞 Light It Loves
Kalanchoe is a sunshine lover, but it’s not a sunbaker. It thrives in bright, indirect light — perfect for that sunny windowsill or outdoor spot that gets morning light and afternoon shade. Indoors, turn the pot occasionally to keep growth even.
💧Watering: Less Is More
If you're the kind of plant parent who occasionally forgets to water — Kalanchoe won’t hold it against you. Water only when the top few centimetres of soil are dry. Always use a pot with drainage — soggy roots are a no-go. During winter or dormancy, cut back even more.
Overwatering is the most common cause of a sulky Kalanchoe, so when in doubt: hold the hose.
🪴 Potting & Soil Tips
Like all succulents, Kalanchoe needs free-draining soil. A cactus and succulent mix is perfect. Pot it in something with a drainage hole, and it’ll be happy. Repot every couple of years if it starts getting crowded.
🌼 How to Keep It Blooming
One of the big draws of Kalanchoe is its burst of blooms, especially during late winter to spring — just when your garden needs a pop of joy. After flowers fade snip off spent blooms and keep giving it light and care.
Use a liquid fertiliser once a month in spring and summer. No feeding during winter — it’s nap time.
🐾 One Little Warning
Kalanchoe is toxic to pets if ingested. So, if you’ve got curious cats or mischievous pups, place it out of reach.
