🌳 How to Care for Your New Deciduous Tree

Follow these simple steps to help it thrive:

1. Pick the Perfect Spot

  • Sunlight: Most ornamentals love full sun to light shade
  • Soil: Well-draining is essential
  • Space: Think about the mature height and width

2. Planting Your Tree

  • Dig a hole twice as wide as the pot and just as deep
  • Gently remove the tree from the pot, tease out roots if needed
  • Plant with the base of the trunk at soil level (not too deep!)
  • Backfill with soil, firm gently

3. Water Well

  • Give a deep watering at planting
  • Continue to water once or twice a week (more often in dry weather) for the first year

4. Mulch Smart

  • Apply mulch around the base, but keep it away from the trunk
  • Helps retain moisture and suppress weeds

5. Stake if Needed

  • Use two stakes and soft ties if your tree is tall or exposed
  • Remove stakes after one year to encourage strong trunks

6. Prune for Shape

  • Light formative pruning can help shape the canopy
  • Best done in winter while dormant, or after flowering (species dependent)

🌿 Why Plant in Winter?

Deciduous trees are dormant right now – meaning they’re resting. Planting during dormancy helps them establish roots without the stress of heat or leaf growth. Come spring, they’ll burst into life with fresh growth and colour!
