🌹 The Journey of a Rose at Lumpy’s 🌹

Roses are one of the most cherished and timeless additions to any garden – and at Lumpy’s, we’re proud to bring you the very best. But have you ever wondered how these beautiful plants get from the grower’s field to your garden in full bloom?

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the journey of our bare-rooted roses – from supplier to flowering treasure.

🚜 Step 1: Harvested at the Grower

Each year, in late autumn to early winter, rose growers carefully dig up their roses while the plants are dormant. These are called bare-rooted roses – meaning they’re sold without soil around the roots. This method keeps the plant lightweight, compact, and perfect for transport.

Once lifted, the roses are:

  • Trimmed back to strong canes
  • Roots pruned for healthy regrowth
  • Labelled by variety (so we know exactly which beauty you’re getting!)

📦 Step 2: Transported to Lumpy’s

The bare-root roses are delivered to Lumpy’s in bulk. We receive dozens of varieties, from fragrant classics like Mr Lincoln and Double Delight, to elegant climbers.

Because they arrive dormant, timing is crucial. Winter is the ideal time to handle, pot and sell bare-rooted roses.

🪴 Step 3: Potting and Preparation

Once they arrive, we get to work potting them up:

  1. Premium potting mix is used to give roots the perfect start.
  2. Each rose is watered in thoroughly to settle the soil and reduce transplant shock.
  3. Labels are checked again for accuracy.
  4. We add a slow-release fertiliser to support healthy root development.

We care for them in-store with:

  • Regular watering (but not overwatering – roses hate soggy roots!)
  • Protection from extreme cold or wind while they establish in pots
  • Weekly check-ups to ensure they’re thriving

🌱 Step 4: In-Store and Ready for You

Once settled in pots, the roses are ready for you to take home! You’ll find them:

  • Clearly labelled with names and flower colours
  • In top condition, pruned and healthy
  • With buds forming or just starting to wake up – ready to grow in your garden!

Our team is always happy to help you choose the right rose for your spot – whether you want fragrance, colour, climbers or compact varieties.

🌸 Step 5: Planting in Your Garden

Once you take your rose home:

  • Choose a sunny spot with at least 6 hours of direct light.
  • Dig a hole twice as wide as the pot.
  • Gently remove the rose from the pot and plant at the same depth.
  • Water in deeply and mulch around the base (keeping mulch away from the stem).
  • Avoid feeding until you see strong new growth – then apply rose-specific fertiliser regularly.

🌼 Ongoing Rose Care Tips

  • Prune in winter each year to encourage bushy growth and big blooms.
  • Deadhead spent flowers during the season to promote repeat blooming.
  • Watch for common pests like aphids – treat early with eco-friendly sprays.
  • Water deeply, especially in dry months.
