With their stunning variety of colours and forms, there's a cymbidium orchid for every taste and setting! Unlike many tropical orchids, cymbidiums thrive in cooler climates, making them a surprisingly hardy and long-lasting perennial.
🌿 POSITION
Like all orchids, cymbidiums love fresh air and plenty of light. But beware of harsh sun! If temps climb above 30°C, their delicate blooms can burn. For best results, place them in dappled or indirect sunlight — under the light shade of an evergreen, under the eaves, or on a sunny but covered verandah or patio.
💧 WATERING
Keep your cymbidium moist year-round, increasing watering in the warmer months (spring to autumn) when the plant is actively growing. In hot weather, you might need to water three times a week. If it's cooler, once or twice may be enough. A good rule: if the potting mix feels moist, skip watering.
🪴 GROWING IN CONTAINERS
Cymbidiums thrive in containers and do best raised off the ground — this boosts airflow and helps keep pests like slugs and snails away. These orchids need a special orchid mix, not regular soil. Look for a blend of coarse bark, charcoal, perlite, and foam.
💡 Tip: Repot in early October, just after flowering finishes.
🌼 FEEDING
October–March: Use a high-nitrogen fertilizer to promote strong leaf growth.
March–October: Switch to a high-potassium fertilizer to boost flowering.
🌸 FLOWERING
With a little love and care, your cymbidium will grace you with elegant blooms for 4–12 weeks, typically between winter and spring.
As a cut flower, cymbidiums can last up to 2–3 weeks in a vase!
Once the flower spikes fade, cut them and pop them in a vase — this helps the plant focus its energy on new growth.
✂️ PRUNING
Wait until all the flowers drop and the stem turns brown. Then, trim the stem at its base, just a few centimetres above the soil. You can also feed with high-nitrogen fertilizer during this time to support leafy growth.
🐛 PESTS & DISEASES
Keep an eye out for pests like snails, slugs, spider mites, and scale insects.
Use pet-friendly snail bait as directed.
Combat spider mites and scale with a gentle spray of eco-oil.
